Understanding AI citations and sources
What is the difference between a brand mention and a citation?
A mention is a reference to a brand in the answer’s text. A citation is a linked source. Your brand can be mentioned without a link to your site, and your site can be cited in an answer that does not discuss your brand.
Are cited sources the same as consulted sources?
Cited sources are links shown with an answer. Consulted-source evidence reports additional sources made available during the response process when that information is provided. A citation list is not a complete record of everything a model may have consulted.
Does a citation prove that a page caused the answer?
A citation connects a source to the answer, but it does not reveal the model’s full reasoning or show how much that page influenced the answer. Read the page and answer together before making a content decision.
Can source research help my brand get cited?
It can reveal questions, formats and information worth addressing in your content. Use it to make your pages more useful and well supported. Publishing on a cited topic or earning a link does not guarantee an AI citation.
